It is familiar with our Poet to use the word betrim in these Senses; and it is certainly of Saxon Derivation; among whom getrymmed signified neat, fine, finisted, &c. The Transmutation of g into b was customary in Words of Saxon Original; as gewarian, to beware; geleaf an, to believe, &c. Of which Changes, thro' all the Letters of the Alphabet, Skinner has discours'd at large in his Prolegomena Etymologica. 7%;rd But if betrimmed may seem to any to depart too far from Conjeaurc. Traceg Q Tex ag jt nQW an pr0p0se another Correction, that requires but a very minute Change, and comes up to the Sense os the former; As, Lewis., standfaft; the 'Devil tempts thee here In Likeness of a new AND TRIMMED Bride. i. e. of a new Bride, and one, as I said before, decked with all the Charms of personal Beauty. I have hinted above, that I remember'd but a single Passage in our Author, where a Word, with the Particle un prefixed to it, should seem to signify the same Thing as the fimple Word would do: But I find since, there are feme other Instances of this kind; One, at least, in which Shakespeare is countenane'd by the Usage of other Writers: Some, in which his present Reading is certainly to be disputed, and therefore ought to be corrected. See King Henrt VIII. pag. 487. for where Pm robbed and bound, There must I be unloos'd, &c. 'Tis evident here, that unloos'd signifies loos'd; and so we find it used by other Writers. To go no farther for Authorities than the Translation of our New Testament, there is a Passage where, in three of the Evangelists, the Word unloosed is made to mean...
